Heiligenkreuz and the Vienna Woods

'Tales from the Vienna Woods' - a visit to one of the oldest Cistercian monasteries in Europe is on the programme for this half day excursion. The biosphere park 'Vienna Woods' is one of the destinations that the Viennese frequently use for a day trip to the countryside. In the past, many artists did the same. Beethoven was a regular visitor. A trip can also be organised to the hunting lodge in Mayerling, where crown prince Rudolph shot his lover and then himself. An additional destination is the Biedermeier town of Baden.

Schloss Hof

The imposing palace is made up of luxury living quarters, an artistic terrace garden and an idyllic mansion and farm. It was built in the late 1720's for Prince Eugene of Savoy. The architect, Johann Lucas von Hildebrandt could really draw on abundant resources. His client was one of the most successful and richest generals of his time. When Schloss Hof was finished in 1730, it was the most impressive example of baroque art.
Join us to enjoy this baroque ensemble. There is a dairy with handicraft huts and a stable with white donkeys and other animals. The terrace garden is another highlight. Schloss Hof is a real hidden gem of Lower Austria.

Klosterneuburg

Just outside of Vienna lies the Monastery of Klosterneuburg. It dates back to 1114 when it was built by the Babenberg Leopold III. The style is mediaeval, but it has baroque imperial apartments and a wine cellar that has more than one floor! The monastery is also one of the oldest and biggest wine producers in Austria. For over 900 years the cloister has been an important sacred and cultural centre in Austria. It was regularly used as a residence by the Babenbergs and Habsburgs. The mix of religious belief, the unique art collection, and its status as the oldest wine producer in Austria gives this destination a special charm. You will see the famous 'Verdun Altar' dating back to the 12th century with its amazing enamel and gold work.
